› Study: Toxins linger in the Indian River Lagoon even in the absence of algae blooms
Algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon often produce toxins that are a danger to marine life and humans. A new study finds that toxins linger in the lagoon, even when there are no algae blooms. Now scientists are trying to identify what is producing the toxins if not excess algae.

› Tampa cleaning services firm awards more than $1M in performance bonuses
Tampa-based Diversified Maintenance, a commercial and industrial cleaning services firm with more than 10,000 employees nationwide, says it awarded more than $1 million in performance awards in 2023. The company, in a statement, says throughout 2023 more than 2,000 Diversified Maintenance employees were “recognized for their outstanding performance toward the company’s success.”

The battle to dethrone the current northern mockingbird with the Florida scrub jay has been going on for decades, but this time a rosy new candidate is in the ring: flamingos. American flamingos, largely sidelined in this match, are an official candidate as of early December. The timing couldn’t be better as dozens of flamingos now crisscross the state – adding a splash of color to mudflats, inland lakes and lagoons.

› Legoland sets opening date for Ferrari attraction
Legoland Florida will open its new Ferrari-themed attraction on March 8, the Winter Haven theme park posted on its website. The Lego Ferrari Build & Race experience will allow visitors to digitally create and test a race car and compete with other racers. It will also a feature a life-sized Ferrari 296 GTS model made of thousands of Lego bricks. Legoland visitors will be able to sit inside the driver’s seat of the replica.
