Memorial Day weekend expected to be busiest for travel in nearly 20 years

The AAA Auto Club Group predicts a record-high number of Floridians will travel on Memorial Day Weekend. Below is an official statement from AAA. AAA forecasts more than 2.5 million Floridians will journey 50 miles or more. That’s 126,500 more holiday travelers than the previous high, which was set last year. Nationally, AAA projects the second highest traveled Memorial Day on record. More from Florida Daily and AAA.

Gas just went down by double digits across Florida. Will prices continue to drop?

Gas prices took a dive this week. In Miami, prices are down more than 13 cents a gallon, and have plummeted 21 cents in the Bradenton-Sarasota area. Prices dropped an average of 15 cents a gallon statewide over last week. North Florida is still the cheapest area in the state to fill up. More from the Miami Herald.

Jacksonville Jaguars identify more bid respondents for Stadium of the Future

As the Jacksonville Jaguars and Mayor Donna Deegan prepare to announce a deal for renovating the 29-year-old EverBank Stadium, the football team ownership posted notice May 2 and May 9 of competitive selection of four more companies that responded to sealed bids for work on the proposed “Stadium of the Future.” A framework for that agreement is scheduled to be presented May 14 to Jacksonville City Council. Florida A&M pauses purported $237.75 million donation after questions about validity

Florida A&M University is putting a purported $237.75 million donation “on pause,” after media reports and college board leaders raised concerns about the actual value of the stock gift—and the details surrounding the donor’s previous donations. It’s a stunning reversal from the fanfare last week at FAMU’s commencement ceremony, when the announcement of the gift made headlines as one of the largest ever personal donations ever to a historically Black college or university. Toorak Capital Partners is bringing Wall Street money to Water Street Tampa

Tampa has snagged the headquarters of one of the largest players in institutional residential real estate lending that’s backed by Wall Street investment giant KKR. Toorak Capital Partners claimed office space in Thousand and One in Water Street Tampa, where CEO John Beacham said he plans to build out the full scope of the formerly New Jersey-based firm’s operations. Orlando Ballet’s longest-serving dancer hangs up her slippers

Anamarie McGinn is following the showbiz adage “Always leave them wanting more.” The longest-serving dancer of Orlando Ballet, McGinn will retire from the company after this week’s season-ending production of “Casanova.” She compares herself a long-running television program with a chuckle. “I wanted to be the show where you still wanted another season,” she says. “not the show where you think they went on too long.”

Gatorland at 75: It’s a family business that’s long in the tooth

Before there was Walt Disney World or the Daytona 500 or Interstate 4, there was Gatorland. The roadside attraction, presenting reptiles and “real Florida,” was started by Owen Godwin, and his family continues to run the business, which is now marking its 75th anniversary on South Orange Blossom Trail.
