› NOAA's GOES-U arrives in Florida for processing ahead of launch
The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite U (GOES-U), the fourth and final weather-observing and environmental monitoring satellite in NOAA's GOES-R Series, is now in Florida. The satellite landed on Tuesday, Jan. 23, in a United States Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy cargo plane at the Launch and Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
› Marriott picks Fort Myers to debut low-cost extended-stay brand
Marriott International is debuting a new affordable midscale extended-stay brand, StudioRes, in Fort Myers. Marriott’s development partner, North Carolina-based Concord Hospitality, plans to build 54 StudioRes locations, including nine in Florida. With multiple issues in construction — materials pricing, inflation and labor shortages among them — that could be a challenge.
› Future no-bid contracts for lobbying will need Jacksonville City Council check-off
Any future no-bid selection of a firm to do lobbying or grant-writing for the city of Jacksonville will have to get City Council approval, a reaction by council to Mayor Donna Deegan awarding a contract for federal lobbying and grant-writing to a campaign supporter after her office determined no other firm in the nation could do the work.
› Miami-Dade mayor wants county voters to approve $2.5B borrowing plan in November
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Wednesday night that she would ask voters to approve a $2.5 billion borrowing plan tied to property taxes to fund sewer extensions, affordable housing and other long-term government projects. In her final State of the County address of her first term, the mayor linked the bond referendum to the speech’s theme of boldness.
