› So long, cigarette butts: Sarasota County bans smoking at public beaches and parks
Smoking cigarettes and filtered cigars will be banned at all Sarasota County beaches and parks beginning Oct. 1. Sarasota County commissioners agreed to impose the ban on Tuesday. The county will run an outreach campaign in August and September to tell the public about the new ban. In late April, commissioners directed county staff to prepare an ordinance that would prohibit smoking at county-owned beaches and parks, and they passed the ordinance on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Mike Moran dissenting.

› Florida becomes home to Carl's Jr.'s first-ever location east of the Mississippi River
Carl's Jr. is bringing its famous West Coast burgers to Florida! The famous fast food chain announced this week it would be opening its first location in the Sunshine State – which is also the first Carl's Jr. to open east of the Mississippi River. It's planned to open in late 2023, according to a news release. The brand new Carl's Jr. location will be located in downtown Doral, which is about half-an-hour north of Miami.

Should you worry about malaria in South Florida? Despite a malaria alert across the state, the number of mosquitoes buzzing around South Florida is down slightly this season compared to this time last year, say the officials who handle the biting bugs. And, so far, the type of mosquitoes that can spread malaria have not been found in significant numbers in the region, according to the officials and a leading infectious disease expert.

› Patronis vows probe of Farmers for dumping 100,000 policyholders
Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis vowed to investigate Farmers Insurance for dropping about 100,000 policies, suggesting that corporate leaders would be dragged before the Legislature next session to answer for their actions. In a scathing news release Tuesday night, Patronis laid blame on executives that he said care more about “woke” policies and “virtue signaling” than acting in the best interest of its customers.
