› Miami OKs Miami Freedom Park site for its office tower
The Miami City Commission took a major step toward a new city government office building to replace the Miami Riverside Center downtown over strong objections of Commissioner Manolo Reyes. On a 4-1 vote June 9, the commission selected city-owned property at 1550 NW 37th Ave. for the new building, right next door to the new Miami Freedom Park, soon home to David Beckham and partners’ Major League Soccer stadium and a commercial park.

› Alachua County taxable property values see annual jump of 9.4% in new estimates
A significant rise in property values, fueled by a hot real estate market and new construction, could generate additional tax revenues for some local governments or allow them to roll back millage rates. Taxable value of all properties in Alachua County has increased by 9.4%, from $17.2 billion last year to $18.9 billion this year, according to preliminary numbers sent to local governments and agencies from the Alachua County Property Appraiser’s Office on May 26.

› After 2 years, curtain rises again at Orlando’s Theater on the Edge
Marco DiGeorge has been waiting. For two, long, relentless years. But after the long hiatus, Theater on the Edge — Orlando’s most unusual theater — is back. On Saturday, it opens the comedy-drama “Say Goodnight, Gracie” — the first play to take the stage since COVID-19 changed everything in early 2020. “We just had to shut the doors,” DiGeorge said. “And they stayed shut for two years.”

› More Fort Lauderdale towers on drawing boards, led by luxury hotel near beach
A bevy of new building projects, some mid-rise, some high rise, is under review this week by the Fort Lauderdale Development Review Committee. Top among them is a splashy 18-floor beach area hotel north of Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard and west of A1A. Others include a 22-floor residential tower in Harbor Beach, a 30-floor apartment building in Flagler Village, a 124-room leisure travel hotel on Marina Mile and a low-rise apartment complex in the Uptown section.
