Gambling appeal in Florida case dropped

In October, a U.S. District Judge ruled that pari-mutuels did not have standing to sue Gov. Ron DeSantis and his administration over the gambling agreement. The governor negotiated the deal with tribal leaders, and lawmakers approved it during a May special session. The pari-mutuels filed separate legal challenges in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. The Washington case was filed against the U.S. Department of the Interior, which oversees Indian gambling issues. In November, Washington-based U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich decided the deal violated a federal law known as the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. [Source: News Service of Florida]

Options weighed for new South Florida area code

With a Dec. 28 deadline for public comments to the state Public Service Commission, three alternatives were put forward Tuesday for a new area code that would relieve the 305 and 786 area codes in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys.
