› Sarasota Memorial earns top maternity ranking from U.S. News & World Report
Sarasota Memorial Hospital – Sarasota Campus earned the highest possible award for maternity care in U.S. News & World Report’s first “Best Hospitals for Maternity” list released Tuesday, the hospital said in a news release. To make the list, hospitals had to demonstrate superior performance on five quality metrics.
› Pensacola organization works to help homeless youth
The United States Council on Homelessness says over 1,000 people who are homeless in Florida are young adults ages 18-24 living without families. The Pensacola chapter of the Children’s Home Society of Florida is working to change that. One of their programs, M-Power, provides housing for youth ages 16-24 at a safe, undisclosed location for up to 18 months.
› Men tied to Italian mob money-laundering case still able to snap up South Florida properties
In March 2013, Italian real estate developer Antonio Velardo was charged in two separate real estate money-laundering probes connected to organized crime in Italy. But by then, he and three other associates had already turned their attention to a new target: South Florida. As they would soon learn, the charges were no impediment to snapping up millions of dollars worth of property in Florida.
› Hillsborough sales tax refund won’t be coming soon
Don’t be counting on a Hillsborough County sales tax refund this holiday season. The fate of the more than $500 million from the now-voided 1 percent sales tax for transportation won’t be determined this year, even though lawyers asked for judicial guidance on a refund six months ago. Voters approved the tax in 2018, but the Florida Supreme Court tossed it out as unconstitutional in February.
