› Florida credit unions agree to merger proposal
Tallahassee, Fla.-based credit unions said Monday they have agreed to merge, pending a December membership vote. The board of directors for the $60.5 million Florida Department of Transportation Credit Union recently voted to consolidate with the $322 million Florida State University Credit Union, which has received preliminary approvals from the NCUA and the state’s office of financial regulation.

› Key Biscayne’s big victory in coastal risk areas
Key Biscayne’s inclusion in the Miami-Dade Beach Coastal Storm Risk Management project, headed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, to shore up the county’s vulnerable beachfront is a big win for the community, said Village Manager Steve Williamson. “A good percentage of our population, now grown to 15,000, lives on the coast,” he said, “all the while knowing the risks of storm surge and sea level rise. We will now have the ability to seek solutions.”

› Seminole bans use of bullhooks, torture devices on exotic animals
To protect exotic animals — including elephants, lions, bears and tigers — that perform in circuses or traveling shows from being harmed or tortured, Seminole County commissioners on Tuesday unanimously banned the use of bullhooks, whips, baseball bats, electrical prods and other devices to train or control their behavior.

› Sarasota County to preserve 228 acres of environmentally sensitive land in Old Miakka
Sarasota County will purchase 228 acres in Old Miakka, an area home to diverse wildlife and several unique Florida habitats. The property is on Myakka Road in eastern Sarasota County. The land purchase will more than double the size of the Old Miakka Preserve, a natural area where visitors can hike, picnic and observe wildlife.
