Florida schools are reopening so we can go back to work. Businesses have other ideas.

In pushing for schools to reopen, Gov. Ron DeSantis has argued that the decision is vital to helping Florida’s economy recover. But across industries, many employers say reopening classrooms — and relieving workers of their daytime parenting duties — is having little influence on whether they are summoning people back to the office. Those who must work in-person do, but leaders at other companies say they will continue to keep their employees at home and adjust when things look safe. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

‘Expect the unexpected:’ Small Orlando businesses struggle to stay afloat as pandemic aid runs dry

Months into the coronavirus pandemic, there’s still no regular rhythm at The Lovely Boutique Market in Orlando’s Audubon Park neighborhood. “I have to expect the unexpected at this stage,” said owner Kimberly Hellstrom. “I don’t know what tomorrow could bring. They could close down all businesses again, and then again I’m hit.” Many small businesses in Orlando are still struggling to survive as federal assistance like Paycheck Protection Program loans have been used up after months of slumping sales and coronavirus restrictions. Jax NAP adds Seaborn Networks as one of its 130+ tenants

Jax NAP, a telecommunications carrier facility in Jacksonville, has added Seaborn Networks — which makes undersea fiber-optic cable systems — as one of its more than 130 tenants. Seaborn was attracted to Jacksonville because it has fewer current systems and cables than other locations in the Southeast and also because Jacksonville provides a direct route west to Texas, a major telecommunications hub, and north to Atlanta, another large hub. Florida company plans medical marijuana grow facility in Greater Pittsburgh area

A Florida medical marijuana company is planning to develop a cultivation facility in the Pittsburgh area as part of a 10-year research pact with the University of Pittsburgh. West Palm Beach, Fla.-based Parallel is collaborating with Pitt to test the company’s cannabis formulations in the treatment of sickle cell disease and other issues. More from the Post Gazette.

A Hialeah company owed $3,100 after denying paid sick leave to workers with COVID-19

A Hialeah trucking and transport company got caught violating the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act part of the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, the U.S. Department of Labor announced. Milum has paid $3,110 in back pay to two employees. According to Labor’s Wage and Hour investigators, the company refused emergency paid sick leave to two workers getting tested after they thought they might have COVID-19. More from the Miami Herald.

13,000 fans will be allowed at Dolphins and Hurricanes home openers at Hard Rock Stadium

The Miami Dolphins and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez have decided to permit fans at Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes games this season amid th e COVID-19 pandemic, at least in September. According to the Miami Dolphins, 13,000 fans will be permitted to attend the Dolphins’ home opener Sept. 17 against the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Hurricanes’ Sept. 10 home opener against UAB.

Women United Flagler goes virtual with Power of the Purse

floridaThe Women United Flagler Chapter will host an online auction and raffle fundraiser on Aug. 30-31 to raise funds for nonprofit agencies in Flagler County that serve women and children within the county. “Although we will miss seeing all of our members and supporters this year, we are excited about more people attending virtually that would not have been able to make an in-person event,” said President of Women United Flagler Linda Mahran.
