› Florida environmental groups go to ‘war’ against highway expansion bill
Calling it the most environmentally damaging bill to advance in the Florida Legislature in 20 years, environmental advocates used Earth Day to draw attention to toll road legislation that critics contend would spark massive suburban sprawl. The highway expansion is being pushed by Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, as a way to alleviate congestion on existing roads and bring economic development to rural areas.

› County commissioners decide Pinellas Trail gap needs another look
The County Commission recently voted to complete a few small segments of the Pinellas Trail, but agreed that a much bigger piece needs a longer look and more discussion. Since 1990, the county has been working to complete the 75-mile Pinellas Trail Loop that stretches from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg.
