World-Class Care, Close to Home

Since 2015, Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center has been at the fore-front of the battle to end cancer for patients throughout the state and the region. With the 2018 opening of its new facility overlooking the St. Johns River, the center will expand this home for world-class care.

The result of a partnership between Baptist Health in Jacksonville, and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center treats the most complicated cancer cases with the same innovative approach. It combines the expertise of one of the world’s leading cancer centers with the comprehensive care of the area’s most preferred health care provider.

This partnership is unique. Chosen as the only full clinical Partner member to date in the Southeast U.S., Baptist Health has committed to following MD Anderson’s exacting protocols related to evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and care for cancer patients.

“We’ve created a destination for highly coordinated cancer care for patients, from screening to diagnosis and treatment to survivorship — including access to the latest research protocols,’’ says Hugh Greene, President and CEO of Baptist Health.

Treatment Delivery
Baptist MD Anderson treats all types and stages of cancer. The Center is organized into specialized clinics, each devoted to specific cancer types, including cancers of the brain and spine; breast cancer; gynecological cancer; urologic cancer; blood and lymphatic cancer; stomach and intestinal cancer; head and neck cancer; bone and soft tissue cancer; lung and chest cancer; and skin cancer.

Each patient is assigned a multidisciplinary team of oncology physicians, nurses, midlevel providers, and other clinicians with expertise in that specialty. This team works with the patient to develop and implement a personalized treatment plan based on the same model of care that has made MD Anderson’s clinical outcomes among the most respected around the globe.

So patients can remain focused on their care, a dedicated oncology nurse navigator also is a vital member of the team. Navigators are part educator and part care coordinator, guiding each patient and family through appointments and questions.

“Audacious” Vision
“MD Anderson Cancer Center has an audacious vision of the future: to end cancer. Baptist is contributing to that mission, and in doing so, we believe we are changing health care for good in our community and beyond,” says Dr. Bill Putnam, Medical Director of Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center.

“Whether for patients here in Jacksonville or those who travel here from other cities, states or even countries, we follow the same proven, evidence-based treatment and care pioneered at MD Anderson, integrating clinical services to provide the best possible outcomes for patients,” says Dr. Putnam. “No other health system in our region has this unique capability — or commitment.”

“Patient treatment alone is not enough. Our difference is in our coordinated delivery of care that treats the cancer while also accommodating the patient’s and family’s many needs.”

A Holistic Approach to Cancer Care
There’s more to cancer treatment than cutting-edge medical care.

The full range of services at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center includes counseling to understand the psychological, physical, and social challenges related to a cancer diagnosis; nutritional guidance; help with treatment and recovery; educational services, especially related to hereditary syndromes and predisposition for future generations; and financial expertise to help estimate out-of-pocket expenses and understand billing and insurance. Supportive services including art therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and even yoga classes are provided, and a survivorship program has been designed to help cancer patients thrive after treatment.

As a faith-based organization, Baptist approaches health holistically, inclusive of body, mind and spirit. A dedicated pastoral care team helps patients and families cope with every stage of the cancer journey, in accordance with their faith traditions and religious preferences.

Building the Future of Cancer Care
The expansion of Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2018 will dramatically enhance every aspect of the patient and family experience. In addition to dedicated clinics offering highly specialized care, the 330,000-sq.-ft. structure will include imaging, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, infusion therapy with calming views of the St. Johns River, as well as original artwork and sculptures throughout the campus. A cafe will feature indoor/outdoor seating, and a retail store with a spa-like environment will help patients address possible changes that occur during the treatment process. Once completed, the new center will triple the capacity of the current center — and bring hope to more patients across the region.
