A Touch of Basel

Art Basel Showings

Museums in Miami-Dade cover a wide spectrum, from political propaganda and Dutch Art Nouveau desks at the Wolfsonian to the Flemish tapestries on the grand ramp of the Bass, and can fill a week of rainy days. Here’s what’s showing from Basel into the new year at:

The Bass Museum of Art. The serene 1930s library in South Beach houses a rich collection of classical art, Austrian painting, textiles and master works by Rubens. Modern shows include the Jumex collection from Mexico City and Dzine, an installation artist in graffiti, neon and Swarovski crystals.

The Lowe Art Museum. The vast museum at the University of Miami is the city’s oldest and one of the largest in the South, covering ancient America, the Renaissance, Baroque and Asian art. On display this winter are contemporary glass and Jewish mosaics from the Roman Empire, and starting Feb. 6, Cuban avant garde (organized by Gainesville’s Harn Museum).

The Wolfsonian-FIU. This elegant movers’ storage space in Miami Beach now holds a stunning collection of early modern art, design and furniture from 1885 to 1945, including New Deal and World’s Fair artifacts and European arts and crafts. New shows include the art of automobile design and modern British prints.

Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. New art, by emerging artists in new media around the world is the focus of this small museum, which will get much bigger in a new design by the late Charles Gwathmey. The winter show examines “realism” in modern manipulations. Coming March 11: Digital artist Cory Arcangel and the minimalist installations of Ceal Floyer.

The Frost Art Museum at FIU. A new building in Coral Gables houses a diverse collection of printmaking, photography and Latin American art from Pre-Columbian to contemporary Caribbean. Big winter shows are of Tibet and artists’ perspective of the Dalai Lama.

Miami Art Museum. The city-owned museum concentrates on modern art from the Western Hemisphere, from Duchamp and Leger to Chuck Close. The season’s big show is on the intricate diagrams and artwork of Argentine Guillermo Kuitca.
