Corporate Transparency Act takes effect Jan. 1, but many businesses don't know about it

The Corporate Transparency Act has stiff fines and a possible jail sentence for noncompliance. But experts say officials of many affected businesses don't even know the law exists. Jonathan Wilson, co-founder and CEO of FinCen Report Co., which helps businesses on compliance with the law, said the act was passed by Congress at the end 2020, but is just now taking effect. The law — aimed at combating money laundering and tax evasion — empowers the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to collect personal information about officials of many U.S. companies. Through the gathering of this information, the law intends to safeguard against drug trafficking and human trafficking. More from Florida Today.

$1.6B cancer center under development wraps a heart around hope

Work began on Moffit Cancer Center's new 775-acre Speros FL campus in Pasco County earlier this year and is progressing at a steady pace. Planned completion of the first phase is in 2028. Some of the components will be finished earlier, as soon as 2026 and 2027, and Moffitt says the first patients will be seen in 2025. More from Business Observer.

Researchers focus on reducing the amount of methane cows produce

Nicolas DiLorenzo, Animal Sciences professor at North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna, is heading a multidisciplinary team including livestock nutritionists, chemists, and microbiologists. Their work will create livestock feed additives to reduce the amount of methane produced during the digestive process. DiLorenzo received a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences for $5 million, to extend research focused on reducing livestock methane emmissions. The seven principles of Kwanzaa, which is also known as the Nguzo Saba in Swahili, are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). The word Kwanzaa in Swahili means first fruits.
