CFO champions cryptocurrency legislation

Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has announced his support for the Department of Financial Services Agency Bill. “The Biden administration has made it clear that they desperately want to expand the reach of government into your home, your personal life, and your finances, which includes regulating cryptocurrency." Patronis said of the president's current framework for digital asset development. More from the Florida Department of Financial Services.

Florida lawmakers propose ban on red light cameras

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data shows 487 red light cameras active state-wide, resulting in over a million notices of violation in fiscal year 2022. There have been many attempts to repeal the law that put cameras in place in certain jurisdictions on grounds that it does more harm than good. Now, two Miami-Dade County lawmakers are have filed proposals to ban the technology. More from WPEC.

Sarasota architecture firm continues to build on St. Pete expansion

After handling several projects in the St. Pete area, Sarasota-based Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors has opted to open an office in downtown St. Petersburg earlier this year. “We are there to really take advantage of the development that’s going on around the Gas Plant District and the Tropicana Field redevelopment,” says Michele Demperio, partner and director of business development for Sweet Sparkman. “There’s a lot of opportunity up there.” More from the Business Observer.

Lakeland-based Publix extends its national expasion

In the last two months of 2023, the Lakeland-based grocery chain extended its presence across the southwest, adding stores in Alabama, Virgina, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Publix added 3 new Florida locations in the past two months, and has two more -- in Panama City and Wesley Chapel -- slated to open next month. More from the Miami Herald.

Duke Energy completes its first floating solar project in Florida

 Duke Energy has completed a new floating solar panel project. The technology only makes up 2% of all solar installations in the U.S. “It’s a floating solar project with a very minimal land footprint,” described Shayna Fraileigh, a project manager for Duke Energy Florida. The project took approximately six months to construct and connect to the grid.
