Florida jobless claims show little change

Applications for unemployment benefits in Florida continue to come in at a slow, steady pace. The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday issued a report that estimated 5,818 initial jobless claims were filed in Florida last week, down from a revised count of 6,183 during the week that ended Dec. 2. Last week’s total also was near a weekly average of 5,809 claims since the start of the year. More from the News Service of Florida.

Brevard's state legislators submit wide range of funding requests in advance of 2024 session

State legislators representing Brevard County have filed 200 appropriation requests in advance of the two-month session of the Florida Legislature that starts Jan. 9. Requests submitted by local legislators run the gamut, with one major category being environmental projects. Requests also have been submitted for Brevard Public Schools, Florida Institute of Technology, Eastern Florida State College, the Brevard Zoo's proposed aquarium at Port Canaveral, other tourism attractions, road projects, health care projects and nonprofit entities. Magic set to announce new naming-rights partner for arena

A new name for the arena where the Magic play their home games is coming soon. An announcement on the new naming-rights partner will be made next Wednesday. Construction workers began to take down “Amway Center” signage on the building Wednesday morning, marking the end of the 13-year naming-rights partnership between the Magic and Amway Global. Monroe County is asking the state for another year before a decision is made that could potentially clear the way for thousands of more homes and buildings in the Florida Keys. The move to open the door to issuing more building permits could spark a development boom not seen in decades in the Keys — one that critics say the environmentally fragile island chain lacks the infrastructure to support. North America’s largest dog show in Orlando this weekend

Thousands of dogs and their owners are congregating in Orlando this week and weekend as North America’s largest dog show returns to Central Florida. The AKC National Championship, presented by Royal Canin, which has been coming to Orlando each year for more than a decade, returns to the Orange County Convention Center with a record-breaking entry. On Dec. 16 and 17, 5,762 dogs will compete for the title of America’s national champion.
