Florida Trend's Legal Elite Notable - General Counsel

A general counsel’s responsibilities can be vast and crucial to the well-being of an organization. Its chief lawyer and a top executive, the general counsel advises leaders and boards on all legal fronts. General counsels draft and negotiate employment, real estate and vendor contracts; they advise on intellectual property and preserve business records. Florida Trend vetted each submission in this Legal Elite NOTABLE section on general counsels. More from Florida Trend.

Florida West Nile virus risk grows in cities as citrus yields to homes

As Florida citrus trees fell to subdivisions, conditions on the ground grew ripe for a city mosquito that prefers nastier water and sewers over another that likes clean-water rural ditches. As a result, entomologists say the St. Louis encephalitis virus, spread by the "cleaner" skeeter, went virtually extinct. Meanwhile, the "dirtier" pest that spreads West Nile encephalitis went more viral, especially in Florida's cities. More from Florida Today.

Nonprofits rush to aid Idalia victims amid inflationary pressures, food insecurity

In what has become a customary annual response during hurricane season, nonprofit food agencies from South Florida quickly rolled trucks and deployed legions of workers last week to help the distressed victims of Hurricane Idalia as it pounded the Gulf Coast of Florida. But the missions took place in an economic climate that is hardly ideal, as inflation has driven up operating costs and chipped away at the ability of lower-wage earners to put enough food on the table. In short, demand is up in a field where organizations can’t pass their costs to clients. More from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Private property insurers get OK to take up to 130K Citizens policies

As efforts continued to sort out damage from Hurricane Idalia, regulators on Friday approved proposals by four private insurers to pull as many as 130,000 policies from the state’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworksy signed orders approving the proposals by Homeowners Choice Property & Casualty Insurance Co., Florida Peninsula Insurance Co., Monarch National Insurance Co. and Edison Insurance Co. The proposals were filed in late July, and the companies will be able to start assuming policies from Citizens about Nov. 21. More from the News Service of Florida.

Advisories likely today for system that could become hurricane, 2nd system likely to form, NHC says

The National Hurricane Center forecasts it will begin advisories on a system that could become Tropical Storm Lee and reach hurricane strength as it nears the Caribbean this week while a second system coming off the coast of Africa is likely to form as well. In its 8 a.m. tropical outlook, the NHC said satellite images indicate the low pressure system with showers and thunderstorms that formed around a tropical wave about halfway between the Cape Verde Islands and Windward Islands of the Caribbean has become better organized overnight. Entertainment
Will a true Tampa mafia story be a Hollywood movie?

Angelo Bedami claims that cardio was key to his drug-smuggling operation that spanned the 1970s through the early ’80s. “I ran Bayshore Boulevard every day,” he said, “just in case I needed to run from the law.” That day came, the lifelong Tampa resident said, when law enforcement was waiting for him on a Florida farm where a planeload of his drugs had landed earlier that day. It might one day be in a biopic about the former mafioso whose associates included Tampa’s Santo Trafficante Jr., Colombia’s Medellin Cartel and former Panamanian military dictator and drug trafficker Manuel Noriega.

Want to sightsee at Orlando International Airport Terminal C? Here’s how.

Orlando International Airport now offers electronic permission slips to explore the new Terminal C. “The program is easy to use and is great for local families or early date nights,” said airport director Kevin Thibault, announcing the new program to aviation leaders. “There are time limitations ,and TSA approval is needed. Guests are required to sign up in advance. The program will be available to the general public.” It’s free, too. Set up as a yearlong experiment, with a daily limit of 50 visitors, it will be interesting to see whether the virtual hall pass becomes popular.
