Florida jobless claims continue falling

Initial unemployment claims continued dropping last week in Florida. The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday said an estimated 5,149 first-time jobless claims were filed in Florida during the week that ended Aug. 26, down from 5,711 during the week that ended Aug. 19. It was the fourth consecutive weekly decrease, with an average of 5,716 claims a week during that period. More from the News Service of Florida.

Families look to rebuild following Idalia's coastal destruction

Along Florida’s Big Bend – the peninsular arch along the Gulf of Mexico – survivors of the dangerous storm emerged Wednesday in the daylight to take stock of their losses. The hurricane struck one of the state’s least populous regions, but people who made their living and their lives in the shadow of Apalachee Bay faced ruin from seawater that surged as much as 15 feet and winds that exceeded 125 mph. Jabil plans $2.2 billion sale of mobility business to Chinese manufacturer

Jabil inked a preliminary agreement with BYD Electronic to sell its mobile electronics manufacturing business in China in a transaction with a potential $2.2 billion price tag, according to the company. The deal with Shenzhen, China-based BYD Electronic, among the largest global producers of rechargeable batteries for cellular handsets, would be “transformational” and the largest transaction in Jabil’s corporate history, CEO Kenny Wilson said in a statement. SpaceX could set record if it knocks out 2 planned launches today

With the threat of Hurricane Idalia past, the Space Coast business of putting rockets into orbit is back with a planned SpaceX liftoff on Thursday night. Elon Musk’s company also has a California launch planned today. If it can manage both, it would set a company record for launches in a month, and match the total number of launches it flew in 2022 with four months still left in 2023. FAU closes $35M brain research building in Jupiter to probe 'control systems' problem

A $35 million building completed in November 2022 at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus has been shut down while investigators try to determine the cause of problems with the facility. Celebrated with a ribbon-cutting in January, FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute was the workplace of 75 faculty members, students and staff. In late July, FAU officials evacuated and closed the building after problems with its control systems surfaced. More from the Palm Beach Post.

Fanatics, Panini battle over trading cards business

Fanatics, the owner of Topps, and Italian trading card-maker Panini are battling for the rights to publish various sports trading cards. Panini’s deal with the NFL Players Association was canceled three years early in favor of Fanatics and Panini says the Jacksonville-based company is creating a monopoly.

This New York favorite and three other restaurants are coming to Miami Worldcenter

Four new restaurants, one a popular Italian spot from New York, are coming to Miami’s largest real estate development. The 27-acre, $6 billion Miami Worldcenter, located across the street from the Kaseya Center, announced that new concepts would join its 300,000 square feet of retail space. The property also includes high-rises with about 5,000 apartments and condos as well as 600 hotel rooms.
