Hurricane season pushes prices at Florida's gas pumps to yearly high

Over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center issued advisories for three named tropical storms, Gert, Emily and Franklin, in the Atlantic Ocean. "The volatility in prices at the pump will likely continue throughout the next couple of months, now that the tropics are beginning to heat up," Jenkins said. How one Miami company is hiring 100 people a month - and wants to continue

Close to 11,000 new jobs were created in South Florida last month. About 100 of those came from Kaseya, a technology network management company. It’s probably best known for paying $117 million to put its name on the downtown arena where the Miami Heat play basketball. It also has ambitions to become a major employer, with plans to hire thousands of people over the next three years. Those ambitions are backed by financial incentives. More from WLRN.

Florida sues a Tallahassee business over hallucinogenic mushroom information

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services this week filed a lawsuit against a Tallahassee business that it alleged did not provide requested information about products that included a type of mushroom that can be hallucinogenic. The department, which regulates food establishments, filed the lawsuit in Leon County circuit court against Tallulah CBD, LLC. More from WMNF and the News Service of Florida.

Many Central Florida arts groups see less from state, but some get first-time grants

As Central Florida arts groups gear up for the fall season, most have been allocated less money through the state’s Division of Arts & Cultural Affairs than last year, although there are several bright spots: A few local organizations are receiving state grants for the first time. But this summer, state legislators voted to fund less than two-thirds of the recommended grants that provide critical operating support to cultural organizations all around the state. Manatee County sustainable community garners national attention

A win for sustainability is in the books after Bradenton-based Pearl Homes was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as a 2023 LEED Power Builder for building a community that developer Marshall Gobuty believes will soon set the standard for sustainability in the homebuilding industry. How Winn-Dixie became one of Florida’s top grocery store chains

After Publix, the most visited grocery store in Florida is Winn-Dixie. The Jacksonville-based chain has built a strong presence in the state since its founding nearly a century ago. Now, it’s about to enter another era under new ownership. Last week, discount grocer Aldi announced plans to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket from Southeastern Grocers for an undisclosed price. The purchase includes 400 stores, 75% of which are in Florida.

Wing walkers train to fly atop WWII biplane at Titusville airport

For the past three weeks, Chuck Julian, founder of Wing Walking USA, has launched formal training of wing walkers to ride atop his structurally modified Super Stearman, which formerly saw action with the Red Baron Squadron air show team. The seasoned stunt pilot also skydives with the Air Sports Parachute Team, which supplies skydiving Santa Clauses during Cocoa Beach's annual Surfing Santas celebrations on Christmas Eve.
