› As downtown Delray Beach grows, should a new historic district be created?
For the past several years, as downtown Delray Beach has thrived, a city panel has been exploring a new idea: Should a historic district be created on Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue? The historic district would comprise of the Atlantic Avenue corridor from Interstate 95 to North Ocean Boulevard, a nearly 2-mile long stretch. And it would join five pre-existing historic districts in Delray Beach alone, and more than 30 historic districts across South Florida.
› Fallout from 1998 wildfires at Kennedy Space Center includes 'forever' chemicals
The fierce wildfires in 1998 had another unforsean fallout at Kennedy Space Center, left undiscovered for two decades: a 69-acre plume of cancer-causing "forever" chemicals. The chemicals are from the fire-fighting foam used to save NASA's South Repeater Building from the flames.
› Sarasota’s Van Wezel named to 2023 list of 11 Florida buildings to save
Weeks after the Sarasota City Commission named a panel to explore future uses for the city-owned Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the iconic structure has been added to the list of the most threatened historic properties in the state. Florida’s "11 to Save" list is put together by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Van Wezel was nominated by the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation, and other groups. Buildings are nominated by the public.
› Mayo Clinic Jacksonville rated best hospital in Florida
Mayo Clinic Jacksonville has once again been rated the top hospital in Florida in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings. This is the seventh time the hospital complex off San Pablo Road south has finished at the top of the rankings in the past eight years, Mayo officials said. Jacksonville Today thanks our sponsors.
