Weekly Jobless Claims Inch Up in Florida
Florida saw a slight uptick in new unemployment claims last week, but the weekly figure remains on pace since the start of the year.
With the state set up to update its unemployment figures on Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 6,197 new claims were filed in Florida last week, 766 more than the 5,431 claims submitted the week ending July 13.
Florida has averaged 5,819 new claims a week since January. Nationally, 228,000 claims were filed last week, down 9,000 from the previous week.
The federal labor agency put the national unemployment rate at 3.6 percent on July 7, down from 3.7 percent the previous month.
The latest report showed the country added 209,000 jobs in June, the 30th consecutive month for job gains.
The June job growth, which fell short of economists’ expectations, was the lowest for a single month since December 2020.
Florida’s unemployment stands at 2.6 percent, representing an estimated 287,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed from a labor force of 10.998 million in mid-June.
