Nicole strengthening as Florida landfall looms

What is now Tropical Storm Nicole is projected to grow into Hurricane Nicole before making landfall on Florida’s east coast early Thursday morning with hurricane warnings now in place from the Brevard-Volusia county line south to Boca Raton, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of the 10 a.m. NHC advisory Tuesday, Nicole is located about 385 miles east-northeast of the northwestern Bahamas and 480 miles east of Melbourne Beach, Florida, up now to 50 mph sustained winds and moving west-northwest at 8 mph. Forecasters expect the storm to turn west and even west-southwest into tonight, then toward the northwest on Thursday. More from the Orlando Sentinel, the News Service of Florida and the AP.

Live updates: Floridians go to the polls on Election Day

Election Day comes as Florida continues to recover from the Category 4 Hurricane Ian, which slammed into the state in late September and killed more than 100 people and caused widespread damage. Last-minute voters are headed to the polls today — but the results of the 2022 midterm elections may not be clear for days, campaign officials and political observers are warning. More from the Florida Times-Union, the Tampa Bay Times, the Miami Herald, and the Orlando Sentinel.

A Jacksonville neighborhood was once home to local legends. It could get national recognition.

The city's Historic Preservation Commission in late October approved a proposed nomination to put the Eastside on the National Register of Historic Places, like the Springfield district just to its west. Approval for that is expected at the Florida National Register Review Board's Thursday meeting. Eastside advocates anticipate that move will lead to national recognition for a neighborhood that is often unknown even by Jacksonville residents. More from the Florida Times-Union.

The Big Olaf Creamery listeria outbreak, which led to a recall of the Sarasota company's ice cream and a disassociation with some of its retail partners, is officially over, according to a federal public health agency. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that the outbreak, which infected 28 people from 11 states, had officially ended, four months after it became public. Jennifer Rominiecki

Jennifer Rominiecki knew she was in for a challenge when she became CEO of Sarasota’s Selby Gardens seven years ago — but maybe not quite as big of a challenge as it turned out. “This site has the world’s best scientifically documented collections of orchids and bromeliads, terrific talent and an amazing bayfront location,” says Rominiecki, who had been in senior leadership at New York Botanical Garden before joining Selby. “But the infrastructure was in really poor condition."
