› DEP air quality data shows emissions in Florida are the lowest on record
Emissions in the state of Florida are the lowest on record, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), despite seasonal impacts from Saharan dust and wildfires. On Oct. 13, for example, the DEP website noted good air quality in every region it monitors, from the Panhandle to South Florida. The DEP measures the Air Quality Index, with levels 0-50 being good, 51-100 as moderate and 101-150 as unhealthy.

One of the doorknobs in the Wonder House rattled so much — without anyone visible to rattle it — that she finally just took it off the door, Krislin Kreis says on a recent Halloween-themed tour of the Bartow house, which she manages and lives in. On the tour, Kreis mixes ghostly stories — she’s a believer — with the fascinating history of the house, which pulled in visitors from the late 1930s to the early ‘60s. In the late ‘30s, it ranked as one of the state’s top attractions at a time when Orlando’s most exciting offerings were Sunday band concerts at Lake Eola Park.

Like many, James Blankenfeld relocated to Florida in part for its beaches and weather. Days after moving to St. Petersburg in 2015, he fell in love with another of Tampa Bay’s offerings. “I couldn’t believe what a great local craft beer industry there was here,” said Blankenfeld, 35. “There were so many options.” Over the next few years, he visited local breweries, learned how each beer was made, and educated himself on the history of the industry. Then, in 2020, while sipping a beer at Darwin Brewing Company in Bradenton, the filmmaker had an idea.
