Special session eyed on taxes, insurance
Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he plans to call a special legislative session to provide property-tax relief to people affected by Hurricane Ian, with the session possibly addressing property-insurance issues. DeSantis also said he planned to issue an executive order that would delay tax-payment deadlines in storm-impacted counties until lawmakers can put changes into law. The order would apply to counties that have received a disaster designation from the federal government. More from the News Service of Florida.
Florida expected to have another warm winter, forecasters say
Despite an early glimpse of fall this week in which temperatures plunged into the 50s, Florida is expected to experience warmer-than-normal temperatures this winter, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The prediction was announced Thursday during a teleconference. Experts from the agency said the U.S. will experience its third consecutive year of La Niña, which has happened only twice before — in the mid-1970s and around the year 2000. Space Coast 'overvalued' real estate market feeling a chill
The weather isn't the only thing that's cooled off in Brevard lately. The real estate market is feeling the effects of the Federal Reserve's moves to increase interest rates, according to the Florida Realtors Industry Data and Analysis Team. Brevard's closed home sales were down 13% in September with 879 homes sold this year, compared with the 1,010 in the year prior. Cash sales also dropped by just more than 16%. A luxury hotel in Surfside has been named one of the best hotels in the world. As part of the 2022 Condé Nast Readers’ Choice Traveler awards, the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club was chosen one of the best hotels in the world. The Four Seasons at the Surf Club was ranked No. 24 out of 50 hotels, the only hotel in Florida to make the list (No. 1 was Cheval Blanc St. Tropez on the French Riviera). More from the Miami Herald.

Headquartered out of a Tampa production facility, VÃ...« Technologies has branches in Nashville, Las Vegas, and Orlando. Each has a wraparound LED screen to create virtual locations. They don’t have such a studio in Los Angeles. Regardless, they’ve gone Hollywood. Well-known Bradenton fruit farm may be looking to sell
After a couple of years of struggling, Mixon Fruit Farms in Bradenton — which has been in operation for nearly 85 years— might look a little different in 2024. The owners of the farm, in a statement kicking off its 84th season, cite citrus tree diseases, COVID-19 closures, staffing issues and Hurricane Ian destruction as some of the challenges the farm has been overcoming. “We have dealt with so much,” says Dean Mixon, president of the farm. With all that to overcome, Dean and his wife and co-owner Janet Mixon now say they are starting to consider making changes.
