› From ‘bleak’ to a $1.1 billion settlement. Judge reflects on twists of Surfside condo case
In the difficult days following the collapse of a condominium in Surfside last June, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman found himself in a courtroom packed with shell-shocked families and dark-suited lawyers. Hanzman was staring at a class-action lawsuit with what he called “bleak” prospects – a low chance of bringing victims adequate compensation and a high chance of dragging on for years.
› Spirit Airlines sets shareholder vote on sale to JetBlue
Spirit Airlines has scheduled a shareholder vote on JetBlue’s proposed $3.7 billion acquisition of Spirit for Oct. 19. Investors who owned Spirit shares on Monday will be eligible to vote, the airline said in a securities filing. The sale would still need approval from U.S. antitrust regulators, a process that is expected to take several months.

Actor Paul Sorvino appeared in more than 150 movies and TV shows in a career stretching back to 1970. Now Jacksonville will get the first shot at seeing his final film. "The Ride," which was filmed in Jacksonville and produced by a long-time resident of the city, makes its debut Saturday at the 5th annual Southeast Regional Film Festival.
› Fort Lauderdale tells gas barge owner: Move boat from neighborhood or face $1,500 in daily fines
The bright yellow gas boat that’s been docked in a ritzy Fort Lauderdale neighborhood for the past three years has got to go, a special magistrate ruled Tuesday. At the city’s request, the owner of the Peterson Fuel barge was ordered to move the boat within 48 hours or face $1,500 in daily fines — $500 a day for each violation of the city code.
