› Surfside land sale now official. What’s next for the oceanfront property where 98 died?
When a 12-story Surfside condominium tower tumbled down last year — killing 98 people in a calamity that made headlines worldwide — South Florida developers kept their distance, choosing not to make an offer for the tragically stained oceanfront property. Instead, thousands of miles away, a billionaire Middle Eastern developer pledged to pay $120 million for the roughly two-acre site where the Champlain Towers South once stood overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
› Broward school district spends $100,000 on conference at Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples
About 180 Broward school administrators traveled to Naples for a recent three-day retreat at the luxury Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, costing taxpayers an estimated $100,000. The school district is reimbursing principals and assistant principals $259 per night for two nights at the five-star Ritz-Carlton, the host hotel for the Broward Principals and Assistants Association 2022 Leadership Retreat, district spokesman John Sullivan said. It’s a practice that has happened for seven or eight years, officials said.
› Attention artists! Brevard Zoo seeks submissions for new art exhibit
The Brevard Zoo is seeking submissions for a unique new art exhibition that challenges artists to “share their vision of the Florida landscape utilizing recycled surfboards as their unique canvas,” according to a news release. Artists wanting to participate will need to provide two-three samples of artwork and a simple sketch of their surfboard design to be considered for inclusion. There will be 20-25 artists awarded the opportunity to participate and they will receive a $1,000 stipend for their work.
› Hillsborough OKs housing protections for tenants
Hillsborough County is opening the door to greater protections for residential renters. The commission on Wednesday approved new requirements for landlords to give tenants 60 days notice of pending rent increases greater than 5% and to give at least 30 days notice if a lease is not being renewed.
