› Experts say boaters need to watch for manatees
Manatee experts are pointing to concerns about boating collisions as the struggling sea cows migrate from an unorthodox feeding area in the Indian River Lagoon. As temperatures go up, boaters are being advised to watch for slow-moving manatees that continue to die at a higher-than-normal rate, mostly because of starvation, despite the feeding effort near Florida Power & Light’s Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center.
› As first responder suicides rise, Florida task force calls for changes in training, help availability
The number of first responders committing suicide continues to rise, according to leaders of the first comprehensive statewide task force representing firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, corrections, training and behavioral health services across Florida. The task force has been meeting for more than a year and is working on its second report to submit to the governor’s office.
› Florida fines largest Medicaid payment vendor $9.1 million over billing problems
Florida fined its largest Medicaid payment vendor nearly $9.1 million over software problems that delayed payments for nearly three months for tens of thousands of health care claims for the state’s sickest and neediest children, the government’s health regulator said Wednesday. In a letter to the CEO of Sunshine State Health Plan Inc. of Tampa, the Agency for Health Care Administration also demanded detailed explanations for how the problems occurred and how the company responded.
› Jill Dame retiring from Leadership Jacksonville
Leadership Jacksonville announced March 24 that Jill Langford Dame, the organization’s CEO since 2013, is retiring at the end of August. “Jill’s dedication and commitment to this organization has been immense and is greatly appreciated. For over nine years she has strengthened the foundation, mission and vision of Leadership Jacksonville, especially in challenging times during the Covid pandemic,” said Kathy Miller, Leadership Jacksonville board president, in a news release.
