Women in leadership - Taking the reins

Profiles of nine women leaders in Florida who are taking leadership roles in their fields, beginning with Kim Ng, General Manager of the Miami Marlins. On a mid-November morning last year at the Miami Marlins stadium in Little Havana, team co-owners Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman introduced Kim Ng as the team’s new general manager. Ng’s hiring made her the first female GM in the 118-year history of Major League Baseball — and for that matter, the first female GM across all major men’s professional sports in the U.S. More from the Florida Trend.

Paid parental leave catches on in South Florida. ‘We have to evolve as a workforce.’

Supporters of paid parental leave have a new source of hope to point toward: More cities and counties across South Florida are embracing the leave policy for their employees. The latest employer to join the ranks is Hallandale Beach, which recently became Broward County’s first city to approve paid parental leave for its workforce. Southeastern Grocers applies to withdraw its IPO nine months after pulling it from the market

After nine months of silence, Southeastern Grocers Inc. filed a withdrawal statement Oct. 29 for its proposed initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Jacksonville-based parent company of Winn-Dixie and three other supermarket chains had planned to go public in January. However, it pulled the IPO off the market just when the deal was supposed to be completed and had not filed any new IPO documents since Jan. 26. More from the Jacksonville Daily Record.

Florida gas prices stabilize after another 13 cent jump

Florida gas prices stabilized over the weekend after rising another 13 cents, last week. The state average now sits at $3.31 per gallon. That's a new 2021 high, and the most expensive daily average price since October 2014. Florida pump prices have climbed a total of 26 cents this month. More from the Destin Log.

Southwest Florida International Airport sets another passenger record, up 19.5% over 2019

The skies remained busy in Southwest Florida as summer turned to fall, with another record for total passenger traffic at the region’s main airport. A total of 551,041 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers in September, according to a statement from the Lee County Port Authority. That’s up 115% compared to September 2020 and 19.5% over September 2019. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is up 69.5% compared to last year, the release adds More from the Business Observer.

'You don't know what you don't know': Jacksonville businesswoman bolstered by entrepreneur program

floridaWhen Stephanie Jones first moved to Jacksonville four years ago, she began hosting quarterly dinner parties to meet other women in her newly adopted hometown. At first the F.L.Y., or First Love Yourself, events had a "lighthearted social atmosphere," she said, "designed to introduce women to new restaurants in our city, make new connections, support one another's goals and enjoy great food." Every quarter each member invited someone new. The group grew quickly and then evolved into something more. "Soon a playful idea became a pathway to a small business," she said.
