Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens Presents Pride Month Programming

Artist lecture, curated tours and more planned to celebrate LGBTQI+ community

| 6/10/2021

June 10, 2021 — JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens will host a series of events throughout June 2021 in observance of Pride Month. These events, presented both in-person at the Museum and virtually, will celebrate the LGBTQI+ community while creating opportunities for connection, reflection and dialogue.

Programs will include:

  • June 15 and 19 | Queer: From Ancient to Contemporary | Queerness has existed in art for centuries. While we may not be able to wedge people from past cultures into our current understanding of gender and sexuality, there have been individuals who were gender non-conforming throughout history and there are numerous examples of queer art and artists in the Cummer Museum collection. Explore these pieces, along with themes of academic erasure and combatting anti-LGBT+ initiatives, with Visitor Experience Associate Amber Angeloni (she/her). (June 15, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; June 19, 2 to 3 p.m.; free; registration required)
  • June 18 | Zanele Muholi in Conversation | Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D., the Museum’s Director and CEO, will host a live virtual lecture with Zanele Muholi. They will discuss how they create their self-portrait series, the impact their work has had around the world, and answer questions from the exhibition’s interactive area. This lecture is presented as part of the Museum’s series, Culture & Conversation, which cultivates meaningful dialogue with diverse audiences and connects people to the arts, gardens and each other. (2 to 3 p.m., free; registration required)

“Jacksonville specifically and the world in general are more vibrant, beautiful places because of the presence and contributions of our LGBTQI+ friends and neighbors,” said Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D., the Cummer Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & Chief Executive Officer. “From internationally renowned artists to hometown talent, we recognize and celebrate the works of LGBTQI+ artists — not just in June, but throughout the year. We proudly uplift all who express their truth through art.”
