› New airline begins flying from Tampa this week
Breeze Airways will fly its inaugural flight this week from Tampa International Airport to Charleston, South Carolina. The airline, founded by Jet Blue’s founder David Neeleman, will eventually fly 39 nonstop routes between 16 cities. Flights will begin Thursday, May 27 with routes between Tampa, Charleston and Hartford, Connecticut. Other destinations will be added weekly through July.

› Jaguars owner contributing $1 million to boost Eastside neighborhood
Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan announced May 21 he is donating $1 million to LIFT JAX to support the “holistic revitalization” of the Eastside neighborhood north of TIAA Bank Field. The contribution is through the Jaguars Foundation. Through the NFL’s Inspire Change platform, the Jaguars and LIFT JAX have been working with Historic Eastside Community Development Corp. for more than a year.

› Do hurricanes repel large sharks? One species seems to enjoy them, study reports
Tiger sharks just got a little more intimidating. A new study has found some of the best-known species of large sharks will leave as powerful Atlantic hurricanes reach shallow waters, but not tiger sharks. They apparently savor the turmoil of destructive winds and waves. Not only do tiger sharks refuse to flee as storms worsen, but they are drawn to their wake.

› Universal’s Aventura Hotel announces reopening date in June
One of Universal Orlando’s most recognizable properties, the Aventura Hotel by Loews, will reopen on June 16, according to posts on the hotel’s official Instagram and Facebook accounts. The wavy, mirrored hotel, visible to drivers passing the theme park on I-4, first closed in March 2020 when the theme parks shut down due to the pandemic. The Aventura briefly opened last summer but closed again in August when COVID-19 cases in Florida began to rise.
