Time's running out on these 2020 Florida bills

A final batch of bills approved this year by the Legislature, many scheduled to become law October 1st, continue to await a call from Gov. Ron DeSantis. The 26 remaining measures, ranging from a revamp of the state’s specialty license-plate system to putting additional teeth into the fight against shark finning and trying to curb e-cigarette use by teens, have been sitting in the House and Senate since the legislative session ended on March 19. Aquaculture Opportunity Area designation could create a Florida deepwater fish-farming industry

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has named a span of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico as one of two Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs) designed to encourage open-ocean fish farming. The AOA designation was created after President Donald Trump issued an executive order in May that expedited development of offshore aquaculture in federal waters. More from the Center Square.

PortMiami looks to Wall Street for help to continue building cruise terminals

Miami-Dade is looking to borrow from Wall Street to fund its cruise terminal projects at PortMiami. On Monday the county commission authorized the issuance of up to $500 million in special obligation bonds, $335 million designated for PortMiami. The approval comes as cruising in the U.S. remains banned until at least Oct. 1, and cruise companies have said they will not begin cruises until Oct. 31. More from the Miami Herald.

Amazon announces 500-job North Jacksonville fulfillment center

Amazon.com Inc. announced Sept. 2 that it will open a new 500-job Jacksonville fulfillment center in fall 2021 at 10501 Cold Storage Road in Imeson Park. The more than 1 million-square-foot center will pick, pack and ship small items, including apparel, accessories and footwear. VanTrust Real Estate LLC is developing the center at Imeson Park in North Jacksonville. Building plans refer to it as the Softlines warehouse for apparel and soft goods. Trump administration announces plans to help Florida growers hurt by Mexican trade

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday an investigation into Mexican trade practices that Florida produce growers say is a threat to their livelihood. The action drew praise from Democrats and Republicans in Florida. More from the Miami Herald.

Startup connects beekeepers and landowners for mutual benefits

floridaLove of bees got Gianna Whitver thinking in 2015 about how she could start a business, an AgTech firm, to connect beekeepers who needed a place to keep their bees with landowners interested in tax savings. To help foster those connections, she founded LeaseHoney, a web portal and matchmaking site. So far, she’s signed up about 400 people across the country on the platform — about 60% landowners and 40% beekeepers. Now, to grow the company, she’s focusing on building buzz and gaining traction in Florida.
