› State to invest $1 million to track how Lake Okeechobee muck fuels harmful algae blooms
Tracking muck from Lake Okeechobee as its waters flow east and west to the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers can shed light on a much-hated Florida problem: harmful algae blooms. The South Florida Water Management District will invest around $1 million over the next four years to study how sediment moves to the coastal estuaries, carrying nutrients that fuel the green, stinky stuff that has repeatedly tainted the lake and rivers on both sides of the state.
› Encompass expanding its presence in Florida
Encompass Health has purchased land in St. Augustine, Florida, for the future construction of a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the company has confirmed plans for a new hospital.

Changes have been underway in the Northeast Florida nonprofit leadership ranks. Here are some of the new arrivals: Lts. Cornelius and Noldine Walton were appointed as the new corps officers at The Salvation Army in Jacksonville. Greg Voss was named executive director of Seamark Ranch in Clay County.
› UNF’s `MedNexus’ to connect health-care and education, build career pathways
A recently approved $6 million state grant will fund the first phase of University of North Florida’s planned MedNexus, which will be the first university-based medical collaboration of its kind and help address an expected shortage of health care professionals, according to UNF. MedNexus will connect health care providers with university students, faculty and researchers and “consolidate health care disciplines, technology development, research and analytics,” according to UNF.
