› Miami Springs newspaper suspends publication amid coronavirus economic collapse
The River Cities Gazette announced Thursday that it has temporarily suspended publication of its newspaper due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. A longtime Miami Herald news partner, the Gazette has served the communities of Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens and Medley for about 40 years.
› Manatee-based hand sanitizer manufacturer increases production in wake of coronavirus
As people worldwide react to the spread of the coronavirus, certain items have flown off store shelves, among them, hand sanitizer. An area manufacturer is experiencing that demand first-hand — Manatee County-based Durisan. The 5-year-old company makes hand sanitizer, hand soap and disinfecting surface wipes.
› For now, despite coronavirus, St. Pete Pier will stick to a May grand opening
The recently announced May opening date for the St. Pete Pier may be in some doubt because of the coronavirus pandemic. More than a week ago, City public works administrator Claude Tankersley left open the possibility of a delay in the Pier’s grand opening — currently scheduled for May 30 — in an email to Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin and top administrators.
› Universal Orlando stops monthly annual-pass payments
Universal Orlando passholders on a monthly payment plan will get some economic relief during the coronavirus outbreak. In a Saturday email message to passholders, Universal announced it would stop collecting money from those using its FlexPay plan.
