If you don't watch a lot of football you may be wondering what kind of players are in the XFL. In the case of the Tampa Bay Vipers, there are lots of names to get excited about, and many names that may be familiar if you've lived in Florida or followed football in the state for a while.
› Florida inmates sew cloth pouches for orphaned kangaroos
Inmates at a Florida jail are sewing cloth pouches for kangaroos and koalas orphaned by wildfires in Australia, even if animal care organizations there have enough of them for the time being. The Seminole County Sheriff's Office tweeted video showing two inmates hard at work at sewing machines, stitching together what are called "joey pouches" for the orphaned marsupials.
› Senate could boost Florida prison guard pay
Senate budget chief Rob Bradley said he expects the Senate’s budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year will include pay raises for correctional officers. “I anticipate we will do pay raises for correctional officers and (Senate President Bill Galvano) has already opined, and many of us fully support the idea, that we will do across-the-board pay raises (for state employees),” Bradley, a Fleming Island Republican who chairs the Appropriations Committee, said.
› St. Pete’s Kerouac house to become a writer’s retreat
After years of back and forth and stalled negotiations, Jack Kerouac’s estate will sell the On The Road author’s St. Petersburg home to the Friends of the Jack Kerouac House nonprofit. The nonprofit intends to turn it into a writer’s retreat.
