› Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Students Among Those to Receive The American Red Cross Broward County Chapter's 2019 Humanitarian Award
The 2019 Honorees are philanthropist Monica Maroone; Lt. Derek Wallin, Commanding Officer at the Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale; and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students Jason Halpern and Luke Rothstein. All honorees embody the spirit of the American Red Cross through their contributions to the welfare and quality of life of South Florida residents.
› Florida woman sues American Airlines in comfort dog dispute
A pregnant Florida woman is suing American Airlines, claiming she and her emotional support dog were mistreated by a flight attendant on an April trip from Miami to Los Angeles. Avigail Diveroli is seeking at least $75,000 in damages in the negligence lawsuit. It says she suffers from severe anxiety and confirmed with the airline twice that her “medically necessary comfort animal,” Simba, could travel with her.
› Feds to unveil rules to protect fish and coral reefs in Florida Keys. Anglers watching.
The federal agency that oversees much of the marine environment in the Florida Keys is expected to release a widely anticipated report next week containing new proposed rules to protect fish, the coral reef and sea grass, recommendations that are likely to establish more no-fishing zones. The federal government designated the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in 1990. It encompasses all surrounding waters of the island chain.
› Florida Crop Surveillance Network May Be Global Model
Growing agricultural production demands and new disease threats will necessitate a global surveillance system for crop diseases, according to a new article in the journal Science. But one of the co-authors from the University of Florida, Karen Garrett, a plant pathology professor in the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, notes that the university has built a similar system on a smaller scale throughout the state of Florida.
