› AutoNation stock rises on new CEO appointment
AutoNation’s stock was up by about 14% in mid-morning trading Tuesday following the appointment of new CEO Cheryl Miller, who had been chief financial officer of AutoNation. The stock was trading at $47.83, up $5.88, on the New York Stock Exchange. AutoNation stock has a 52-week range of $32.83 to $49.76 a share.
› Florida's Park Service celebrates record year for prescribed fires
Florida has reached record temps before, but that's not always because of the weather. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) state park service has celebrated a record year for prescribed fires. “I am proud of the hard work of our fire crews and park staff and their dedication to protecting Florida’s precious natural resources," said DEP Secretary Noah Valenstein.
› Florida’s biggest coal plant is switching to natural gas. So why aren’t climate activists cheering?
The utility running Florida’s biggest coal-burning power plant is hoping to get a positive vote this week from Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet to convert from coal to natural gas. The utility says its goal is to make the plant more environmentally friendly. Yet environmental activists in Tampa are opposing the proposal, saying that the company isn’t being proactive enough as the Earth’s climate crisis intensifies.
› Smoking remains OK at some Orlando ‘old-timey’ bars, pool halls
George’s Bar & Grill in Orlando decided to ban indoor smoking in the early 2000s, but it only lasted a few weeks. The bar made the short-lived change following passage of a Florida constitutional amendment that prohibited smoking inside workplaces but that also had an exception for bars that get less than 10 percent of their revenue from food sales.
