Hurricane Michael: A hellish October surprise in races for Florida governor, Senate?

A hellish October surprise is looming off Florida’s Gulf Coast, threatening to upend some of the country’s most important mid-term political races with hurricane-force winds. Less than a month from election day, Hurricane Michael is forecast to hit North Florida on Wednesday. A direct pass over Tallahassee would likely have dramatic consequences for both the race for governor and U.S. Senate, which feature the Democratic mayor of the city and the Republican governor of the state, respectively.More from the Miami Herald.

27 Cuban migrants jump from boat and run to Florida shore

Twenty-seven Cuban migrants jumped off a boat on Sunday as they approached Virginia Key’s shoreline in Miami, U.S. Coast Guard officials said. Once they swam to land, they ran and hid. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with Miami police, have located some of them. Helicopters swirled across the sky as authorities tried to find the others. Florida’s youngest parents face mounting challenges, report states

In Florida, 78 percent of children of young parents live in low-income families, which is tied with Washington, D.C., for the fourth-highest rate nationally. Maine and Georgia topped the list, with 85 percent of children of young parents living in poverty. Vermont had the lowest percentage at 53 percent. More from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Sarasota test pilot envisions new altitude record for glider

floridaAs recently as last year, shortly before the world’s most efficient flying machine was set to challenge the 29-year-old altitude record of the U-2 spyplane, some critics were saying the idea was delusional. But during Miguel Iturmendi’s third and final flight into the South American stratosphere aboard the Perlan 2, the Sarasota test pilot was surfing a mountain wave so massive, he says it could’ve crested 100,000 feet, easily.
