The 2017 World Rowing Championships brought more than $22.6 million in economic impact to Florida, a new study said.

More than $18.6 million of the direct and indirect impact from athletes, teams and visitors was spent in Sarasota and Manatee counties before, during and after the weeklong championship at Nathan Benderson Park in September, the study concluded.

The numbers underscore the success of one of the region’s signature events almost against the odds: A largely European sport hosted in America and only days after a destructive hurricane swept the length of the state.
