Student Housing

Bob Snell | 6/1/2006

The University of Florida abandoned plans to close a 75-year-old off-campus cooperative that was created to house low-income students. School officials had sued the Collegiate Living Organization in March, seeking permission to evict residents from the premises. The move came after a city fire inspection revealed numerous hazards at the NW 15th Street home. Former CLO alumni, who formed a foundation to raise money to correct the most serious problems, challenged the university's position. While UF officials said they are satisfied with efforts to improve the home, they signaled the school will petition a court to give the school's governing board control of the CLO so the building can be properly maintained.
