Heads Up

Transit Study

Martha Brannigan | 6/1/2006
The Florida Department of Transportation is studying the viability of local and regional passenger transit service along the rail route pioneered by Henry Flagler in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The Florida East Coast Corridor Transit Analysis Study, funded with $4 million from the federal government, is examining the possibility of sharing tracks with FEC freight trains. The tracks run through 28 downtown areas from Miami to Jupiter and near about a dozen other towns. The study also will assess alternatives.
The first phase of the wide-reaching study will run through next spring, and phase two will take at least another year and a half.
"If everything comes together -- including funding," says Scott Seeburger, project manager for FDOT, "we could have service as early as six years from now. If we look at what's more typical, this would take a time frame of about
12 years."
