Statewide Business Briefs - Sept. 2006
INVESTING
CONDO/HOTELS -- As of March, Miami/Fort Lauderdale was the second-biggest market for condo/hotel purchases in the U.S., followed by Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Purchasers tend to assume that rents will generate profits for them, however owners often find out that a break-even situation is the best-case scenario. The National Association of Condo Hotel Owners, a new nonprofit formed earlier this year and based in Scottsdale, Ariz., has launched a website for the growing number of people investing in the vacation and secondary housing units: Nacho.us
EDUCATION
HISPANIC GRADS -- Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine has named nine Florida universities among the top 100 colleges in the United States awarding degrees to Hispanics in 2004-05: Florida International University, No. 1 (2,677 degrees); University of Florida, 12 (969); University of Central Florida, 16 (815); Florida State University, 20 (768); University of Miami, 31 (602); Barry University, 37 (556); Florida Atlantic University, 39 (542); University of South Florida, 41 (536); Nova Southeastern, 74 (297).
TRAVEL
OFF-LIMITS -- A new state law makes it illegal for Florida universities to use state money to travel to any of five countries listed as a state sponsor of terrorism -- including Cuba -- by the U.S. State Department.
