CARTER, 50 President, CEO / Community Foundation of Broward, Fort Lauderdale Focus: A range of philanthropic work, from creating and managing donor funds to running a non-profit resource center to providing infrastructure to local non-profits. Deep roots: Born and raised in Broward. Got an advertising degree from the University of Florida but returned south after graduating. "Gainesville was way too cold for me." Rewards: "I find this very rewarding because this is the community I grew up in. It's my personal legacy." Achievements: Since she became CEO in 1997, assets have more than tripled to $66 million, as of June 30, and grant making climbed to almost $4 million a year from $1 million. New options: A new pension law allows donors to give their IRAs directly to charity. Relaxation: Enjoys active vacations with her engineer husband, Michael, like biking Switzerland's back roads. "You ride for a while and then stay at five-star hotels and eat five-star dinners."
