? Becker & Poliakoff hired Miguel Diaz de la Portilla to lead the firm's government and lobbying practice in Miami-Dade County. The former Miami- Dade commissioner will continue his land-use, zoning and governmental procurement practice.
? Philadelphia-based Cozen O'Connor named trial lawyer Richard M. Dunn managing partner of the Miami office.
? Amy Ostrom rejoined Akerman Senterfitt as patent agent in the firm's West Palm Beach office. Ostrom, who has a doctorate in molecular genetics, handles patent applications in genetics, gene therapy, molecular biology and virology, as well as inventions in biotech, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
? Orlando lawyer Frederick W. Leonhardt of GrayRobinson was named chairman of the Florida Chamber Political Institute, a research and legislative organization that works to promote a business-friendly environment in the Florida Legislature.
? Foley & Lardner tapped Michael Gay as its managing partner in Orlando; he replaces Edmund Baxa, who steps down after 11 years to focus on his construction and white-collar defense practice as well as his role as chairman of the Foley's national pro bono committee. Gay says his family connection with the firm "makes the appointment particularly special." The office he will lead was originally the Orlando firm of van den Berg, Gay, Burke, Wilson & Arkin, which his late father, Frank, co-founded in the late 1960s. The firm merged with Foley in 1985.
