› ‘Conversations that matter’: FMU professor’s barbershop talks aim to address community concerns, build bridges
A South Florida university professor had an idea to help air community concerns, and it has led him to use his influence to hold important conversations inside the barbershop, all while empowering the men sitting in the chairs. For decades, the barbershop has been a place where men can speak their mind, rub elbows with the elders of the community, and receive feedback about who they are, who they want to be and what they believe to be true about the world around them.
› Groveland is 1st city in Florida certified as Dark Sky Community
If you’re looking for some of the best dark skies in Florida, you don’t have to drive too far. Groveland was recently named the first certified Dark Sky Community in not only the state but the entire Southeastern U.S. To earn the certification, Groveland officials said they engaged with residents, business owners, and community leaders to raise awareness about the benefits of protecting the night sky, which included holding virtual workshops, tabling at events, developing a citizen-scientist program to monitor light pollution, and hosting the city’s first Star Party attended by over 700 guests.

More than a decade ago, vitriol from outraged residents who lived along the Colony West Golf Course forced Tamarac City Hall to make a promise. The city would save the golf course from developers, spending $3 million on the land deal in 2011, and nearly $2 million in the first year of operation alone on golf-related upgrades, to buy it to make that happen.
› $2.5 billion bank names new leaders for retail, commercial banking divisions
Four bankers under the Crews Bank & Trust brand have been promoted to high-level executive roles. The bank’s four entities — Charlotte State Bank & Trust, Crews Bank & Trust, Englewood Bank & Trust and Wauchula State Bank — in total have nearly $2.5 billion in assets. The bank recently announced that by fall all the banks will be rebranded under the Crews Bank & Trust name.
