› Elsa caused $1 billion in damage amid Florida landfall and beyond, NHC says
New information on Hurricane Elsa spun into formation last week, seven months after the first hurricane of the 2021 season took form. The National Hurricane Center released Friday its findings on the Category 1 hurricane that made landfall July 7 in the United States along Florida’s big bend as a tropical storm. The 2021 storm was notable to meteorologists for many reasons, including its longevity.
› Cross-Bay Ferry lands $4.8 million U.S. grant
The proposed Cross-Bay Ferry route linking southern Hillsborough to MacDill Air Force Base just picked up a new fare — $4.8 million from the federal government for a new boat. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, announced late Monday that the U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding a grant totaling $4,863,280 to the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority for the passenger ferry service.
› Brightline completes complex tracks at Orlando airport
Brightline announced Tuesday that it has finished construction of tracks at Orlando International Airport. The South Florida company is closing in on completion of a 170-mile extension from West Palm Beach and is about a year from beginning passenger service between Miami and Orlando, with multiple stops in between.
› Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry: Curbside recycling returning April 4
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry announced Tuesday that curbside recycling will return on April 4. The city suspended pickup up recycling in early October so it could catch up on picking up yard debris and regular household garage. Yard debris had sat in front of homes for weeks in some neighborhoods.
