› North Port commission seeks input on Mosaic phosphate mining expansion in DeSoto County
With an eye toward the likelihood that DeSoto County will reconsider a push by Mosaic to expand its mining operation onto more than 14,000 acres, the North Port City Commission is asking for input on the decision. The City Commission unanimously voted to have staff prepare a letter to the DeSoto County Commission, Mosaic, regional elected officials and regulatory agencies, because the activity could impact both Big Slough and the Peace River, which are sources of the city’s drinking water.

› Attention speed demons: Legendary Miami brand Cigarette has a new owner
A legendary Miami boating brand has a new owner. Cigarette Racing Team, whose founder, Don Aronow, led a famously flamboyant life before his violent death on a Miami side street, has been purchased by billionaire entrepreneur John H. Ruiz and Lionheart Capital, best known as the parent company of fast-casual chain BurgerFi and developer of real estate projects including the Ritz Carlton Residences Miami Beach.

Tax protests have spiraled into wide-ranging demonstrations and harsh government crackdowns in Colombia, frustrating immigrants in Tampa Bay who were seeing signs of hope for improvement in their troubled nation. Many have turned their anger toward the government of President Ivan Duque over the deaths of dozens of protesters, the injury of thousands more, the disappearance of countless Colombians and reports of sexual assaults against women in police custody.

› Cuban baseball player defects after arriving in Florida
The Cuban Baseball Federation confirmed Wednesday night that one of the players on the national team defected a few hours after the squad arrived in Florida to participate in a qualifying tournament for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The organization identified the player as César Prieto, 22.
