Florida's 5G technology revolution is coming

The technology that enables connectivity on mobile devices is in its fourth generation — 4G. That technology made mobile internet speeds up to 500 times faster than the previous generation; it enabled fast internet browsing on phones and tablets and enabled those mobile devices to receive high-definition images and make high-def video calls. Big telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint are now beginning to roll out the next iteration of mobile technology — 5G — that promises even faster connectivity. Arts funding gets a boost in Florida budget

Arts and culture organizations across Florida will get far more money in the new state budget than they did last year, but much less than was requested to fully fund hundreds of programs and operations. The state budget approved by the Legislature last weekend and awaiting a signature from Gov. Ron DeSantis, would provide $21.25 million, about eight times more than the $2.65 million allocated for the current year. [Source: Sarasota Herald-Tribune]

Hong Kong toolmaker chooses Fort Lauderdale for new U.S. headquarters

Techtronic Industries — the maker of many tools and popular appliance brands — is moving its U.S. headquarters to Fort Lauderdale, which business development officials say is another corporate headquarters win for the region. The Hong Kong-based company is behind brands such as Ryobi and Milwaukee power tools, as well as Hoover, Oreck and Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners. [Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel]

The secret is out. Tampa’s food scene isn’t just for bay area residents and the casual visitor any more. The city, with its cornucopia of culinary contributions, is gaining a reputation as one of the top up-and-coming culinary destinations in the United States. Travel website TripAdvisor recently named Tampa — along with Birmingham, St. Louis, Richmond, Dallas, Kansas City and Indianapolis — as one of seven such up-and-comers, joining dozens of other publications in acknowledging Tampa’s growing dominance as a dining destination. A Mexican tomato beef could lead to a bigger trade battle

The Commerce Department is expected to decide Tuesday to end the U.S.-Mexico tomato agreement, giving Florida tomato growers a long-sought victory and fueling another potential U.S. trade dispute with its southern neighbor. The department gave Mexico a 90-day notice in February that the U.S. planned to withdraw from the most recent agreement negotiated between the two countries in 2013. Free beer is back this summer at SeaWorld Orlando. The company announced the fan-favorite promotion will return in June during Tuesday’s earnings call during which it reported that SeaWorld parks’ attendance and revenue rose for the fifth straight quarter.

› Sales, profits climb at Helios Technologies
Acquisitions completed last year pushed first-quarter sales and profits higher at Helios Technologies Inc. Helios, formerly known as Sun Hydraulics Corp., posted net income of $16.4 million, or 51 cents per diluted share, for the first three months of 2019, compared with $11.9 million, or 40 cents, a year earlier when fewer shares were outstanding.
