Created in 1983, Florida’s Legal Board Certification Program offers 22 state-approved specialties, the most in the nation. Some facts:

• As of October, 4,259 Florida lawyers were board certified. More than 84,000 lawyers are members of the Florida Bar.
• Only certified attorneys are allowed to identify or advertise themselves as specialists or experts.
• The program’s newest specialties are intellectual property law and state and federal government administrative practice.
• The Florida Bar has applied to the Florida Supreme Court for two new specialties to be approved this year: Adoption law and education law.
