Stocks of Florida's top public companies dive on fears of trade war

The realization of the tit-for-tat trade tariffs between the world’s two largest economies -- U.S. and China -- is reverberating across financial markets. Here is how major U.S. markets ended their day yesterday: Dow 724.42; S&P 68.24; NYSE 306.37; NASDAQ 178.61. Almost all of Florida's top public companies ended the day in the red, with many losing from 1% to 7% of value. $1.3 trillion federal spending bill has plenty for Florida, but not everyone likes it

The $1.3 trillion federal spending bill the House passed Thursday packs a lot for Florida. Millions for Everglades restoration, ground systems at Kennedy Space Center and an assessment of the red snapper stock in the Gulf of Mexico. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Naples, called the bill "imperfect" but cited the extra funding for Everglades restoration and Herbert Hoover Dike repairs as reasons to support the bill. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, pushed back, calling the way such an expensive bill was rushed through "an insult to the American people." [Source: Naples Daily News]

Panorama Tower soars over Miami as Florida's tallest building

Miami’s new Panorama Tower developed by Florida East Coast Realty is shaping up to be the tallest structure in Florida and the tallest residential building south of New York. The building, which is 868 feet and 85 stories tall, houses 821 luxury rental apartments, a Hyatt Centric boutique hotel, retail tenants and office spaces. [Source: Forbes]

Florida has second highest rate of people suffering from Alzheimer's

The number of people suffering from Alzheimer's continues to increase in the US, with Florida second behind California for the state with the highest number of dementia patients. Data from the Alzheimer's Association of Central Florida shows more than 540,000 people aged 65 and older in Florida suffer from the disease. [Source: WTXL]
