Trail Gear

Our low flatlands spare hikers altitude sickness, falling rocks, cliff-side perils or heavy hiking boots, but you may have to wade through tidal washes and fight thorns and swarms of insects.

Gear: Many Florida hikers prefer athletic shoes. Others like hiking boots. All recommend good socks.

Essentials: Take insect repellent and lots of water. Don't drink trail-side water without a?filter even if it looks clear.

Start early: You'll stay cool and won't get caught in the dark.

Get directions: Not all trails are well marked. Take a map and compass. Cell phones and GPS systems may not work.

Prepare: Start walking at home so your leg muscles won't be shocked.

Taking the kids: Be patient and ready to cut the trip short. A forced march is no fun.
