Island Retreat

Grove Isle's saltwater pool features a Roman waterfall and shiatsu massage.

Grove Isle Hotel & Spa, a private resort on a 22-acre island in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, is sporting an updated look after two years of renovations.

Located in Coconut Grove, the private resort is owned by Seattle-based Noble House, which operates 13 boutique hotels nationwide, including Little Palm Island in Little Torch Key, LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort in Naples and Ocean Key in Key West.

The resort added $500,000 in refurbishments to its newly named Patrick McEnroe Tennis Center, which McEnroe visits regularly. The center has been named among the top tennis clubs in the U.S., says Eric Gavin, the resort’s director of sales and marketing. It includes 11 Har-Tru tennis courts and one U.S. Open-type hard tennis court.

Grove Isle’s 6,000-sq.-ft. SpaTerre offers traditional treatments plus one of the few Watsu massage pools on the East Coast. The saltwater pool combines water and shiatsu massage, with a Roman waterfall as a backdrop.

The grounds include an 85-slip private marina, a waterfront jogging trail, a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool. It is also home to the popular Baleen restaurant.

Guests are greeted at the resort’s gate by an ambassador with a handheld computer who takes them to their rooms and handles concierge duties such as dinner and tennis reservations.

Rooms range from $689 a night in-season to $359 in the summer, with a Florida resident special for $269 through September. Suites are $859 a night in-season and $359 in the summer.
